My Favorite (Sigh-Worthy) Books of All Time…So Far

Hi All! Very happy to be done with the election so we can get back to talking about the really important stuff…BOOKS!

So I realized the other day that every so often, a book comes along that completely and fully seizes me. I mean, it takes over my life, my heart, my soul, everything. They are few and far between but when you do stumble upon one, it’s like magic. For me, these books stay with me so long after I finish them. And I always know I’ve come across one when I hear someone mention the title of the book a few weeks or months after I’ve read it and I literally sigh with the memory of it. Not squeal (because I have a list of those books too) but SIGH. Because they were that magical to me. Because I actually envy the person who gets to read it for the first time.

And since I was just fortunate enough to finish one, I was inspired to start a list. So here it goes: My Favorite (Sigh-Worthy) Books of All Time…so far. In no particular order:

1) THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE by Jandy Nelson

2) ROOM by Emma Donoghue

3) THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE by Audrey Niffenegger

4) THE HELP by Kathryn Stockett

5) WINTERGIRLS by Laurie Halse Anderson

6) THE CHOSEN ONE by Carol Lynch Williams

7) THE HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne Collins

So what about you? What are your favorite sigh-worthy books?

  1. Hi, Jessica! I actually found your website/blog from the blurb about you at Overnight Prints this morning. I am a book fiend so when I saw that you were a writer, I had to check out your links. Even though I am, ahem, technically no longer a young adult (though 35 IS young still, right? And an adult…so…), young adult has always been one of my favorite genres. I’ve actually not read any of your books but they all sound right up my alley, so I will be reading them soon. Anyway, like you I knew at age 7 I wanted to be a writer when I grew up and also went into a “real job” (okay, a series of real jobs) first. I quit that in 2005 and became…an artist. Yeah, there’s a plot twist! I’ve been doing that for a living ever since…still telling stories, just with pictures instead of words. Anyway! I had to comment on this post, because The Sky Is Everywhere would also be my #1. What you call your “sigh worthy” books, I always refer to as “books that make me want to write”. That’s my ultimate compliment…but come to think of it, The Sky Is Everywhere definitely makes me sigh when thinking of it. I haven’t read any of the others on your list — I know, I know, someone who loves YA but hasn’t read Hunger Games — but I kind of have to now. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your suggestions! KJ P.S. Sorry for the length of this.

  2. Hi Kathy! Sorry for the delay in replying. I’m so thrilled to hear how you found my site! 🙂 Keep reading!!!
