Courtney’s bonus content is a deleted scene from her book The Queen of England: Ascension

*****

A little bit of background, Queen Juliette is meeting a character who is a potential enemy. I ultimately cut the scene because while I loved having these two interact, ultimately, it didn’t do much to drive the plot forward. No real spoilers for any of the books in the trilogy.

Barely dropping what I would consider a functional curtsey, Lady Lorraine said, “Congratulations, your majesty.”

“For what exactly?” Her words certainly didn’t match what she had recently written about me.

“Two years as queen. You deserve a celebration.”

I didn’t believe a word she was saying. “And may I extend my congratulations to you as well.”

“What for?” Her blue eyes narrowed.

“I have not seen you since the completion of your nuptials to Prince Greig. Felicitations and many happy returns to you and your new husband.”

“We simply couldn’t bear to not be married another moment.”

“How wonderful.”

“And it must be so difficult for you to be apart from Prince Estevan…” She gestured vaguely to an antique globe, as if to measure the distance.

“Of course it is, but as monarch, the demands of my time more or less call for an extended engagement while I focus on the country. I am very fortunate that high highness understands this about our relationship. And where is Prince Greig this evening? I have not made his acquaintance.” They had actively avoided my coronation and had sighted ‘safety concerns’ for visiting ever since. In light of the recent Kraken attack, they weren’t entirely wrong.

“He wasn’t feeling well.”

The statement wasn’t one I could question. “That’s a shame. Were you able to spend much time in Lichtenplatz before your return to London?”

“For a short time, yes.”

“And did you take in the Sacred Forest? I must admit I am very curious about the legends surrounding it.”

At this question, Lorraine looked very intently in my direction. For such a silly individual, I didn’t think she was possible of being so serious. “No, I wasn’t allowed.”

Apparently unsatisfied that we were not going to come to blows on the dance floor, the crowd around us began to disperse. Dropping my voice, I said, “Your comments were completely uncalled for.”

“Ah! I wondered if her majesty’s claws would come out this evening.”

“You have no business attacking the crown.” I clenched a hand on Excalibur, who remained quiet at my waist.

“Don’t you mean going after you?”

“No, I mean the monarch. The institution. Your Queen.”

“La!” Lorraine waved a hand in the air. “I honestly didn’t think anyone would take my comments seriously.”

“I don’t believe you. I think you knew exactly what you were doing.”

“If so, then why haven’t you responded? Scared, your majesty?”

“And give your story traction? I think not.” When she didn’t respond, I asked, “And why now? Why threaten my powers when all I’ve done is to protect my country?”

“I guess you will have to wait and see.”

“I don’t know what you’re playing at, Lady Lorraine, but I am the most powerful woman in the world and you would be wise not to forget that fact.”

“For now…” She drifted off, leaving me furious
