Perfect Gifts for the Writers on Your List
If you’re looking for the perfect gift for the writers in your life, look no further! I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite gifts for writers to help get you started.
1. Freewrite Traveler
All writers sometimes struggle with staying focused on getting those words written instead of scrolling through social media, checking email, or falling down a research rabbit hole. Enter, the Freewrite Traveler! This portable, distraction-free writing tool is like a small laptop with only one purpose–writing! It has an e-ink screen that’s easy on the eyes, backs up all your writing to your favorite cloud storage, and it’s small and light to make writing easy anywhere you go!
2. Books for Writers
Writers are also readers. We all love a good story, but we also love learning more about the craft of writing from other great storytellers. Here are a few book ideas for writers of all skill levels:
You can find all of these titles at your local bookstore or favorite online retailer.
3. Notebooks
A writer can never have too many notebooks. Even if the writer in your life is into all things tech and wouldn’t go anywhere without their laptop, chances are, they still love the feeling of jotting ideas, character notes, or bits of dialogue down in a good old-fashioned notebook. Most bookstores and office supply stores have a great selection if you want to shop local, or you can order a Moleskine (one of my favorites) online.
4. Coffee and Tea
We writers love our caffeine! It’s hard to go wrong with a delicious cup of liquid motivation, and getting it couldn’t be easier or more convenient than with a membership to a coffee of-the-month club, tea of-the-month club, or a selection from The Cultured Cup or your local coffee shop. Trust me, any writer who’s struggled with a case of brain-fog or lack of motivation during their writing time will be very grateful!
5. Save the Cat! Beat & Story Cards
Save the Cat! is the method I teach in my course How to Write a Bestselling Novel in 15 Steps, and my book Save the Cat! Writes a Novel. It’s also the method I’ve used to plot every book I’ve written since the beginning of my career! These story cards help writers map out their story and identify the meaning of every scene, and they can be an invaluable resource to writers who are struggling with plotting or pacing issues.
6. Scribbler Box
Who doesn’t love to receive a box full of surprises each month? Described as a “writing conference in a box,” Scribbler is a monthly subscription box filled with gifts, autographed novels, teaching tools, and access to live chats with literary agents & editors, all specifically curated with writers in mind. Subscription boxes are all the rage, and there isn’t a better one out there for writers who are looking to take their craft to the next level.
7. Scrivener Writing Software
There are tons of word processing programs in the world, but many writers swear by Scrivener as their writing program of choice. This powerful tool is great for any writing project from short stories to full-length novels. It’s packed with amazing features to help writers organize their research, outline their novels, format ebooks or screenplays, and more. And It all comes in an attractive, easy-to-navigate format! Be sure to check out their gifting guidelines here.
8. Gift Subscription to the Writing Mastery Academy
Of course, I couldn’t very well write a whole post about gifts for writers without mentioning that my own Writing Mastery Academy now offers 3-, 6-, and 12-month gift subscriptions! A membership to the Academy includes access to all my online writing courses, surprise bonus content, and monthly live webinars (as well as a library of past webinars on-demand). It’s an excellent gift option for writers of all skill levels.
9. Gift Card to your Local Bookstore
Like I said, writers are readers, and you can never go wrong with a gift card to a bookstore. The writer on your gift list can pick up a new notebook, a craft book (like one of the titles listed above), a research resource for their current work-in-progress, or even just the latest bestseller for some storytelling inspiration. A bookstore gift card is a sure win.
Wanna support local bookstores? Indiebound.org allows you to enter your gift recipient’s zip code and find local bookstores near them. Check the local bookstore’s website for gift card information.
10. Fun Shirts
I don’t know many writers who don’t love a clever writing-themed t-shirt. Here’s a great selection of comfy-enough-for-writing shirts that will make the writer in your life want to head to the nearest coffee shop to get some writing done AND show off their new favorite tee.
I’m Not Quiet, I’m Plotting
I’m a Writer. Anything you say or do may be used in a story.
It’s a good day to write
11. Do Not Disturb Sign
I’m a big believer in the Do Not Disturb sign for maximizing productivity. Unless the writer on your list has a private writing studio all to themselves, chances are they’ve been known to face the occasional interruption during a writing session. Do Not Disturb signs–like this Shhh! Writing In Progress Sign–are great for helping writers carve out some quiet time and reach their daily word count without those little interruptions that pull focus and kill productivity.
12. Noise Cancelling Headphones
And last, but certainly not least, a personal must-have for my own writing practice, and a great tool for any writer who is serious about distraction-free writing. Noise-canceling headphones are perfect for eliminating distractions and building a “sound bubble” for full story immersion. Whether working in a busy coffee shop or just blocking out the neighborhood noise outside their own window, a good pair of noise-canceling headphones can make a huge difference in writing productivity.
So, there you have it! Whether you need the perfect gift for a writer you know and love, OR you’re looking to treat yourself to something as a reward for crushing your writing goals, I hope you’ll feel inspired by some of the items on this list. Whatever the occasion, the lucky writer in your life should be thrilled by a gift that shows your support for the thing they love most!
