Two years ago, I set out on an amazing and challenging adventure: to take 11 years of writing and plotting wisdom and distill it down into a single book. That book is called SAVE THE CAT! WRITES A NOVEL and I’m thrilled to see it launched into the world on October 9, 2018.
The Save the Cat! Methodology (originally created for screenwriters and adapted by yours truly for novelists) breaks down all stories into 15 common plot points or “beats.” These same beats can be found in works as classic as Pride and Prejudice, 1984, and The Grapes of Wrath and as contemporary as The Girl on the Train, Ready Player One, and The Hate U Give.
Save the Cat! is essentially a blueprint for epic storytelling.
In order to fully impart the power and effectiveness of this methodology, I wanted to include tons of examples in the finished book. My original intent was to feature 20 full-length novel beat sheets (i.e. plot breakdowns), illustrating how the beats fit into some of your favorite novels. Unfortunately, the manuscript was deemed too long for print and I was asked to cut half of the beat sheets from the final draft.
But those beat sheets still exist, and they are still amazing, informative examples of the Save the Cat! Methodology in action.

Deciding which beat sheets to cut from the finished book was torturous. I loved them all and I felt they all exemplified the Save the Cat! method in different yet equally important ways.
